3 Things to Look for in an Organized Play Program

Hey there gamers. Kurt here, sharing something that’s close to my heart: Organized Play. Throughout my TCG journey, I’ve been involved at every level – as a player, judge, and organizer. Naturally, as a competitive TCG player, I’m drawn to organized play. Having a solid system in place is crucial for the game’s longevity and attracting new players. Today, let’s explore the key factors I consider when diving into a new Trading Card Game’s Organized Play!

1. Organized Play Prize Packs & Promos

When it comes to playing a new TCG (or even an established one), most folks crave exclusives. Specifically, I’m talking about promotional cards or packs designed for organized play. These promos can feature popular cards with alternate artwork, unique stamps, or even functionally unique cards exclusively obtainable through participating in organized play. Rewarding players beyond the standard “pack per win” offered by most LGS’ is essential. Going the extra mile with promotional merch like playmats, card binders, or posters as top prizes/giveaways at events can be a game-changer. These small investments go a long way in enticing new players and keeping the existing ones engaged week after week.

2. A Roadmap of Organized Play Events

Ask any player, and they’ll likely aspire to compete at a higher level beyond local weekly play. Store Championships, Regionals, Nationals, and even an invitation-only Worlds Championship are what I love to see when approaching a new TCG on a competitive level. Establishing an annual timeline for these events is crucial. It gives players something to look forward to, train for, and achieve. Even if a player initially shows no interest in a regional-level event, regular local play may inspire them to attend. Solid event dates also allow players to plan around external factors like taking time off work and saving money on flights if they decide to travel across the country for your event. Without a well-defined events structure, a TCG will struggle to attract the fiercest competitors and ultimately stunt its growth.

3. A Defined Organized Play Tournament Rule Set

Lastly, it is imperative to underscore the paramount importance of a clearly defined rule set governing tournament-level play. While more relaxed rules may be applicable during weekly local events, the introduction of prizes, prestige, and potentially even financial stakes necessitates the implementation of a comprehensive tournament policy and ruleset. These guidelines encompass various aspects, including provisions to address issues such as slow play, rectifying decklist errors, handling allegations of cheating, and even establishing procedures to resolve end-of-game stalemates. The presence of these well-defined parameters not only instills confidence among seasoned competitive players, but also encourages them to delve deeply into the game’s intricacies, ultimately transforming them into ambassadors for the game itself. Moreover, they serve as a valuable resource for local players seeking guidance on nuanced queries that may not be readily answerable by every player.
